My Ottawa à moi

Video poetry in honour and defense of my beautiful city.

The poetry was written thanks to a grant from the City of Ottawa in 2011.

Bi
I composed part of this poem while on my bike, if I remember correctly. The words and sounds just lined up neatly, and I discovered the bilingual poet inside me. Un coming out, une déclaration d'amour.

Poème d'amour à ma ville

I was working in Windsor, where I heard some people saying how much they loved their city, while I had been thinking about how dreary it was. It reminded me of many discussions I've had with people who don't like Ottawa.

Skating down the Canal, I was thinking about the men who gave their lives to build this feat of engineering.

Look up
So, next time you're walking down the street... look up!

Holes like scars
J'ai mal à ma ville. The City and the Developers don't realise that old buildings add charm and character to a city.

Homonymie
When I hear radio announcers saying that "Ottawa has done this, decided that", it always takes me a few seconds to understand that they're talking about the deciders in Parliament, and not about my actual city.

In defence of my city
This poem is born of frustration.

  1. Put into moving words and wonderful pictures how I have often thought and felt about our city.
